[MRCA] MRCA Digest, Vol 256, Issue 28 handset

I having used the An/prc 47 in Marine Corps extensively the standard was the H33 handset which has a carbon mic element. The other handsets M80,H189 and H250 are used with the VHF radios such PRC 25,77 and VRC radios and the M80 would be used as well. Becarefull if you try to adapt something there is bias voltage for the Mic element.Having said all that I have several working 47’s and I just found and old Shure hand held mic with a carbon mic element in it. I tested the element by clipping it to the H33 handset mic contacts and it works perfectly.So i need to find the U-77u (h33) connector i don’t want to hack up a perfectly good H33.MikeW1ZFB

Hi All,
The manual I have for the PRC-47 only shows the use of the M-80 handset.
Is there anything in the PRC-47 that would make the use of an H-250 a
problem? I have several working Vietnam vintage radios (Prc-68A, PRC-25,
PRC-77) and all now have NOS "modern" H-250s with the volume control and
I'd like to also use one on the PRC-47 that I will be receiving soon.

Hi Clare - The usual handset for the "Old Family" PRC-47 is the H-33 which
has a carbon mic element. I believe the H-189/250's that are often used
with the New Family gear like the PRC-25/77 uses a dynamic mic element and
therefore not directly compatible with the Old Family equipment. And
different connectors of course. (U-77 versus U-229). Also I don't think I
have ever seen an H-250 handset with a volume control. (But I never say
never! haha)
Have fun with the PRC-47. When they work, they work great...

Oh darn, I did it again. I should have written PRC-74 and M-80.
I just tested connecting an H-250 and an M-80 that I purchased years ago,
both connected to a PRC-77. and the M-80 PTT and mic worked fine, good
sidetone in the H-250. But how will I hear incoming audio from the PRC-74
with just the M-80 mic attached? Dumb question but I'm all jazzed waiting
for Gilbert next month (getting the '74 then) and don't want to wait to
learn more.
Oh, one more thing these H-250s with volume controls also come with a
plug-in earbud.
