Mosfets are the way to go.The on resistance is down to 0.018 ohms on some that I use for vibrator subs. BJTs pale in comparison.A pair of mosfets can  be driven by a cd4047 with no gate drivers! Very low parts count with this config.For more ambitious high voltage and currentProjects , there are specialized gate driver IcsWhich simplify the build. They have very good rise/ fall times too.
