Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this. I should have mentioned that the truck's starting battery is 12V so I'm not looking to use this port for starting or charging. I have a separate 28V battery for all radio equipment this will be used for and it has its own charging solution(s).
The two problems I have with "old" style nato 2-pin connector is first, the rather large footprint given the base is about 4" x 3" that is rather big to try to find some space for it. Second, the male plugs seem impossible to find, and expensive when they are found. Ray and others point out that you can get these adapters at reasonable prices. But my thought is, instead of adapting to the new coaxial standard, why not just start there? I have the luxury of picking a connector instead of having one that I must adapt to.
The 3-pin connector has the benefit of being smaller and, with three pins I could conceivably allow connections for both 12V and 24V loads. But as others have pointed out, it isn't commonly used externally on vehicles.
So I think where I end up is back to the new-style NATO receptacle. Its footprint is better at about 2" x 2" and accessories are plentiful both new and used. But I found one disconcerting thing. I have read that there were actually two different standard receptacles! I love standards because there are so many of them hihi! Apparently, one had a larger diameter center conductor and another had a smaller diameter center conductor. And I've seen references to this at companies that manufacture these things to be careful about which to order... arrgghh. I'll have to research this more to make sure I get matching stuff.
Thanks for all the input, you've helped me think through this choice.

Subject: [Army-Radios] 24V Vehicular Connector?
Hi there. I am doing some radio-related electrical work on my military vehicle (1986 Land Rover Defender). One thing I want to do is to create an external connector for 24V to run things like radios outside the vehicle. I am trying to think of a good panel-mount connector that can be out in the elements, carry some modest current (maybe max 15A). At first, I was thinking of using the NATO slave connector, but that is seriously overkill and I think I've ruled that out. I also came across this connector, but I'm not sure what mates with it:

I'm not sure if anyone knows about this connector and what mates with it, but It is an interesting option. Something about it makes me think it might be for older vehicles? Maybe Korean war vintage? Not sure.
And finally, I saw this on ebay, this is an MX-7777B/GRC. And this connector look like a good idea. The other pic on ebay shows a screw on cover, which of course I would want. Does anyone know the MS (or Amphenol equivalent) of this connector? I don't need a whole MX-7777 just to harvest a connector hihi. It seems pretty easy to get mating connectors on ebay for this connector which makes it attractive.

Thanks
