Punta Arenas... That's impressive. Been there once, in 1967. USS Hammerberg, DE-1015, during UNITAS VII. I received several SWLs from Swan in the mid-70s. 407 kHz HH. It ran 1Kw.

Hi Jeep

I have run into the extra dit to indicate a backup transmitter several times while monitoring NDBs. Here's a DSP decode of NAS 270 Kc in Chile:

I've caught this several times, some with and some without the extra dit.

Actually, common item back aways. On each airways NDB, whether Compass Locator, L, M, H, or HH power level, there was a keyer unit that had an installed code wheel. FAA spares were mechanically set for the station ident, typically 3 letters. If the navaid was switched to the back-up transmitter, and extra, delayed dit was added. Our ident was SWA (Swan Island HH). The tone ident was impressed on the CW carrier in AM at 1020 Hz. Probably typical of all such beacons, aero or marine.
