I would have been on the net today but my daughter and son-in-law are here and wanted to take a hike so I took along my handheld Tecsun PL-368 to see if I could pick it up. We went to Hartshorne Woods park which is appropriate because it was formerly Highlands Air-Force station during the Cold War.

Conditions were good and the local noise level was low so I was able to pick up everyone on the net with the 3 foot telescoping whip. WB2JWU was a 5x7. KA3EKH was the weakest at 4x4 and the channel masters were W2AO and NM2K at 5x8.

My daughter was interested in the Moose and Squirrel name so I explained the Cold War connection with the cartoon; she did remember Boris and Natasha. She heard the hum on WB2JWU's signal so I explained it was from his radio, a classic PRC-47, and I showed her a picture of the radio. We had a good brisk walk ad I think she now understands how I operate during those noontime nets.

Reminds me of something I saw at the NSA once, they had a bunch of Bearcat first generation programmable scanners but they caused so much interference they had to be mounted insides fully shelled rack mount enclosures. Hope I don’t have to do the same with the Chinese GPS standard because I like the little display with the frequency counter and real time clock.
