I was an innocent bystander, USAF by trade, so appreciate the info. Glad I had the experience.... I guess I should look more things up in my Jane's.

Hi Jeep - 5"-54 became a standard in the USN some time after WWII. Still in use these days.

Pardon a non-Navy person to comment. I sailed on a number of cruises while working for NAVOCEANO in DC. The DE cans I sailed on had 3"-50 guns in enclosed turrets. THE DDs had 5"-38s in turrets. Ships like the Leahy, a DLG (?) had some open 5" guns that were slightly different caliber. Got to see a lot in Med and a UNITAS cruises.

The US Navy has (had) two types of 5” guns onboard ship - 5” 37 and 5” 54. I think the Iowas had 5” 37 ( second number I think is caliber. Has to do with a combination of shell size and barrel length ).
