Yes doing the LED bulb conversion really
makes them shine!  I’ve been using the ones sold at Home Depot, think they were about 10 bucks last time I bought some.  If you want a really bright portable LED light, the Ryobi 18V battery tool line’s  spotlight is hard to beat.  Seven small parabolic reflected LEDs focused on a single large parabolic backplane.  Wonder how far a pair of them used as Morse signal lamps could work!
