As stated earlier, am planning on operating on both forty and sixty meter nets this weekend at Hagerstown. At the Aberdeen site was not an issue using my drive on twenty-four foot push up mast and being able to attach end of inverted V to stakes in the ground. Just had to be careful to install in locations that people walk thru. They had several small trees on the island so sometimes attached to the tree one end of the V.
At Hagerstown Airport will be on concrete or asphalt and under strict orders not to drive any stakes, spikes or ground rods. Something like being at the old Aberdeen site being could not use the center mast pivot and fiberglass tube mast set or do a ground rod there.
Was thinking that I can use the chain link fence just across from spaces M11 and M12 to attach end of V antennas at a safe level above ground, will have traffic traveling underneath but don't think that will be an issue. Bigger question is if there is an issue attaching two ends of the same antenna to a chain link fence?
Can always use the seventeen-foot vertical antenna on the mutt but because of the restrictions cannot drive a ground rod and do not know if I will be able to run a counterpoise.
Anyone have any thoughts or ideas? Remember that the idea is to use something period appropriate and not go with a Ham Stick or loop antenna. Just that working on hard surface parking lots is always a issue.
Back at Gilbert (MRCA) used the fiberglass mast kit along with ground rod at radio and did end up attaching one end of the V to a chain-link fence but the other was pounded into the ground.
Always had good results on the low bands using the V, the antenna on the MUTT works great on twenty meters and above and wonder if it would be better to just use the whip even though I won't have long counterpose or ground?
Attached is a drawing that shows the old Aberdeen site (Fig-1) and the New Hagerstown site (Fig-2).
