Rob,
Simple answer, both.
Examples from my career:
- Harris RF3200 XCVR with ALE connected to a Harris 3281 tuner and a Shakespeare 32' whip mounted on the roof of a telecommunication facility.
- Datron TW7000 (1KW amp) with ALE connected to a Datron ABB1000 broadband antenna mounted on the roof of a telecommunication facility.
- Datron TW7000 with ALE connected to a B&W T2FD mounted on the roof of a telecommunication facility.
- Harris RF3200 XCVR with ALE connected to a Harris 3281 tuner and a Harris RF1912 fan dipole suspended from creosote utility poles at a telecommunication facility.
- Harris RF3200 XCVR with ALE connected to a Sabre 800-T-T-1-J-HD Antenna System (Broadband) setup in a caged area of a parking lot at a telecommunication facility.

Do they need to use a broadband antenna, or do they cycle through different antenna matching solutions when checking different bands? Or?
Can you give an example?
I'm still in the iron age...
