During Vietnam is the ubiquitous PRC-25 & -77 man pack FM transceivers were equipped to act together in retrans mode utilizing the MK-456 / GRC retransmission cable for the PRC-77 . I believe this ability could also be used with the RT-524 & other members of the VRC-12 family. I had an NOS MK-456 & had a -25 hooked to a -77. It worked as intended: a bi-directional repeater. While these could be primarily used in fixed installations like hill tops, there was no reason why they couldn't be used for mobile use. There were charts in the back of the TM on proper frequency separation.
