In sunny Vietnam I believe the term used was "Retrans" instead of repeater.  Each side of the retrans operated the
usual single-frequency simplex. It could be used to tie two nets together as well as to just extend the range of, say,
a battalion net with widely scattered companies.. I believe Nui Ba Den (the 'Black Virgin Mountain') near Tay Ninh
had several of these.
Since each side of the retrans operated single frequency RT, no duplexer was used. This obviously greatly aided
daily frequency changes, if that was done. It might also enable use of the concept with today's 'frequency-hopping'
radios, given special care to all freqs used. Synchronizing and timing could make it impractical though.
I had no personal experience with retrans operation. I was in 'listening silence' mode in my job.
