I had a similar situation. A local old timer talked me into joining about 25 years ago, so I did. I went on the nets for a while, but I found them to be too regimented and felt like I was being ordered around all the time. While I worked flor the military machine for over 50 years, up to when I retired, I did not need that BS so quit after about a month or two. 73 – Mike

I've been following this thread with interest. I decided join MARS probably 7 or 8 years ago. I was given all of the required reading and was told, "just get on the nets and train on the air." I did what they said and there was this obnoxious blow hard that had a voice and cadiance that I thought had to be a character from one of those phony phone call joke comedy albums. I would mess and up and forget to say "over" or something and this guy would not only correct me, but also dress me down for an over the top amount of time.

I remember thinking to myself I'm adult for Christ sake and I wouldn't put up with this nonsense in the work place why would I bother with a hobby I volunteer for. This guy was the epitome of tool! I was asked by the person who recruited me and the look in his face told me he knew this guy was driving people away, but no one was willing to show him the door.

Funny thing is I've been to some of these "emergency groups" and the impression I got was a lot of people that meant well and were good at memorizing test material to be an extra and a pile of free time to read government training materials.

If the the kaa-kaa his the impeller and my local county, or FD needs help putting up an antenna or a connector soldered, or someone to make heads or tails of equipment to talk to the next county over. I'm more than qualified and I'll gladly help.
