I’m impressed Jim, thank you for sharing that story and the pictures. It’s hard to believe there was room for that rig and that it worked as well as it did.
I too remember the Mercury program as a small boy, and almost remember when Sputnik went up.

Mark –
Sorry you missed Project Mercury……I dug through my collection and found a couple of memories you might enjoy. Attached are pictures of the Collins 618V-1 HF Voice TR used on Project Mercury. This compact AM Transceiver was mounted on a shelf along side the astronaut in the Mercury Spacecraft. Note the two vacuum tubes used in the transmitter RF output. The Transceiver operated single channel just above the ham 20 meter band.
I remember finding these at JA Brenners Scrap Metals on New York Avenue in Washington DC. They had the scrap contract for Goddard Space Flight Center.
Sorry about the loss of the hamfests but looking forward to better times this next year!

Sure did! I also remember Gemini and Apollo, but not Mercury.

Hope everybody is watching the Space X launch from the Kennedy Space Flight Center right now. Reminds me of the Gemini launches when I was a kid.
