Maybe it would be better to take this kind of discussion off the list. It serves no productive purpose and, while you are at it, maybe you could learn how to edit out all the past postings ad nauseam, quoting relevant sentences and spare the rest of us from reading the whole message again and again.
People may have the knowledge and experience to work on and repair this equipment but may choose to have it done by someone else for reasons that should be obvious but apparently are not. Failing eyesight and steadiness of hand are only a couple by possibilities. Lack of time may be another.
Finally one’s class of license should never be used as an indicator of knowledge or competence. I remember when some “higher class” hams used to look down on the Technician Class licensees but in reality it is mainly that class of licensee who developed the repeater systems and conducted experimentation in VHF, UHF, microwave and satellite communications. In fact some of the most knowledgeable people I know on the subject of radio receivers and listening are not licensed at all. From some if the drivel I hear on the bands who can blame them? They are shortwave listeners and have no interest in transmitting, thus no license. Some hams look down on them as well as “not being smart enough to get an amateur license”. This is nonsense of course. Today’s licensure requirements only require that one needs to be a good test-taker to pass. You may know how to recognize the correct answer when you see it on the test but may have no clue what it means. And that includes Extra Class license holders as well. My own daughter who passed the Amateur Extra examination at age fourteen will be the first to admit that she is in that category. However having her amateur license made her eligible for merit-based scholarships that saved ME thousands of dollars and she is graduation next week with Honours and has zero student debt as she heads for grad school.
Lighten up guys and enjoy life. When you die you are dead for a long time.
73,
Michael, W1RC
