Thanks to all who responded. I have the info that Scott needed so I will QSP that to him.
Hope to see all of you on MilCom FD. (I will be using the GRC-109 w/the built in CW key so my code speed will be around 10-15 WPM with lots of mistakes!!!)

Rich,
The radio you are thinking about was the Yaesu FT-70.
I do not know if the FT-857 was used in military exercises but I use one to participate in the
Moose and Squirrel Net because I do lots of portable operation. The only operating mil set I have is a Harris RF-5000 which is too large and heavy for my operation.
Hopefully they will have a category for non-mil sets so that others can participate.

A friend of mine wanted to know if a Yaesu FT-857 was ever used by the military? He would like to participate in the military FD as a MilCom radio user. I told him I would bet back to him after pinging the group. I seem to remember that Yaesu did have a commercial/military man-pack HF rig but I don't believe it was an 857.
