> Army and Air Force MARS programs will be conducting a Joint Service exercise designated as “COMEX 19-4,” November 3rd – 18th, 2019. The exercise will be conducted in every state of the Continental US, Hawaii, and Alaska.
>
> Leading up to the exercise - MARS members are tasked to make contact with their local Amateur Radio communities (Clubs, ARES, RACES), identify a point of contact, create a roster and coordinate activities such as testing software, and making HF contacts on 60 meters with Amateur Radio support, then repeating during the exercise.
>
> Objectives include providing interested amateurs with an amateur operator version of a military standard software modem 188-110 (M110), which can be found at the following web link: http://www.usarmymars.org/resources/software The software can be found under the developer Steve Hajducek with full installation instruction guides.
>
> This will allow amateur radio operators to receive HF radio DoD broadcasts, monitor radio station WWV for DoD broadcast information, and report various data elements back into the MARS program via radio. Additionally, MARS members are tasked to utilize the 60 meter band to make voice and/or digital contacts with amateur stations to receive situational awareness information. FEMA Region 7 will be monitoring channel 5 (5403.5 kHz USB)
>
> Through the month of October, amateur radio involvement will begin upon MARS member contact, installing software, doing radio checks on VHF/UHF and 80/75 and 60 meters, for testing and coordination. On or around October 31, there will be broadcast announcements on WWV and WWVH to kick off the event. WWV will transmit the announcements at 10 minutes past the hour, while WWVH will transmit them at 10 minutes before the hour.
>
> MARS members are expected to attend local nets and frequencies, making calls to amateur stations to receive situational awareness from local areas.
>
> The last stages of the exercise on Nov 16-18, DoD will send a series of voice and digital broadcast messages on 60 meter channel 1, (5330.5 kHz USB), which can be copied with the M110 digital software program.
>
> This is a long term exercise to make and maintain a community network to assist in the future communication needs of our country in case of a major crisis. We ask for your support to help us prepare and organize.
>
> How amateur radio operators can help:
>
>
>
> - Monitor 60 meter Channels.
>
> - Download, install and test the public version of our military standard data software
>
> - Supply of localized specific situational awareness information,
>
> - Be a contact point and liaison with a radio organization, i.e. a local ham club

> As of 2018, FCC has registered 750,000 amateur radio operators in the US. We are one of the largest decentralized communication groups in the country. We are “boots on the ground” and have the ability to report real time conditions and situational awareness up through the chain of command to get assistance and supplies where it is needed. MARS members train every day to be that point of contact, ready to serve our communities and nation if that day comes.
