Just FYI - when I was a Field Artillery Special Weapons Team Assembly Officer ( read "Special Weapons" as nuclear) in the early 1980s, in Europe, the only radio used in my commo jeep ( a 1/4 ton M-151 that towed a generator trailer that had two 1.5 kw generators to power the radio when the vehicle was emplaced ) , the radio used for all traffic, was an AN/GRC-106. We didn't have any fancy antenna towers or anything like that ( that I can recall ) although I do remember a long wire antenna we could set us if we were going to be in once place for a while. We mostly operated off our vehicle antenna. We didn't do a lot of transmitting - that wasn't our job. We had the radio, that's it. No scramblers like NESTOR or VINSON, break up any transmissions to under 3 seconds to make DF more difficult, no digital capability, all that stuff. We were the final customer as far as any special kind of radio traffic was concerned, and transmitting would give away our position. The weapons system I worked mostly with was the old M-115 Towed 8 inch Howitzer that one of our Allies was still using in the early 1980's. The guns were manufactured in 1944. Our M and A ( Maintenance and Assembly) vehicle has an old 2 1/2 ton M-109 van that our host country provided ( and the heater in the back did not work - it was like operating in a refrigerator in the winter ).

folkswe had fun at Aberdeen firing up some tactical radios
as youcan see from the pictures I picked up a vrc86 hf radio set which uses comoonents from the arc199 a military adaptation of a king hf aircraft radio
thanks to Francesco, I checked out the manual and see it used several types of unique antennas. since I am looking to mount this in my m151 special ops jeep I am looking for the AB1311 antenna base. it uses ms116 117 and 118 elements for 15 ft whip. the vase appears to have some relay switched load coils in it controlled from a 4 wire cable to the radio
if anyone has one if these or a schematic or parts list let me know. thanks Jeff kg2bz
