Very good idea.  Another thing to bear in mind with these things is 
isolation - or lack thereof.   In our applications we want to be able to 
have a common ground connection between the input (e.g. 12v) and HV 
output because that's how our radios work.   But these buck and boost 
converters don't always tolerate that, and the only way to know for sure 
is to "buy it and try it" because the eBay sellers have zero technical 
knowledge in most cases.   I always use a low value resistor that will 
act as a fuse if necessary to verify that common connections are possible.
