My first soldering device was a re-purposed Ungar wood-burning tool. In High School I acquired a used Wen red plastic gun. What a step forward in technology! Later, and to today, I use Weller guns and find them very reliable... except when one drops it on a concrete floor. I still have, I think, a spare shell, someplace. I have found, however, that unlike past experience, tips do not fare remotely as well as they used to. I do not recall having to replace a tip, Heathkit, after Heathkit, after Heathkit. Well, that's not true... I do recall either burning out or breaking one on Field Day and then using a piece of #12 copper wire as a field expedient. Just like SOS pads, Cooper (nee Weller) tips do not last as long as they used to. Manufactured failure? As we speak... I'm on the net locating tip suppliers......
