7 days till Able Archer '83. There is still room for additional
operators. This is your chance to operate from a retired Cold War Nike
missile site.
Its November 1983, America is divided when a former actor has been elected
to the White House. The Soviets Call Him a Cowboy, and it appears as though
we have taken one step closer to nuclear Armageddon. At this time we had a
NATO exercise which rehearsed Armageddon.
when I think of this year's operation Able Archer special event I can't
help but think of the parallels of America then and now. The Soviet Union
now called Russia has made it come back on the world stage again what some
people call a controversial president is in office and the middle of
October began one of the largest NATO exercises off the coast of Norway in
recent history. Operation Trident juncture may not be the same as Able
Archer but I can't help but Wonder if history is destined to repeat
itself......... Now that I got your attention and got you thinking look
below and read about operation Able Archer special event.
The Sixth annual Able Archer '83 Special event (W3A) quickly
approaching. For those unfamiliar with Able Archer '83 it was a ten-day
(NATO) communications exercise starting on November 2, 1983, that spanned
Western Europe, centered on the Supreme Headquarters Allied Europe
Headquarters, Able Archer exercises simulated a period of conflict
escalation, culminating in a simulated DEFCON

The
exercise also introduced a new, unique format of coded communication, radio
silences, and the participation of heads of government. The realistic
nature of the 1983 exercise, coupled with deteriorating relations between
the United States and the Soviet Union and the anticipated arrival ofPershing

nuclear
missiles in Europe, led some members of the Soviet Politburo and military
to believe that Able Archer 83 was a ruse of war, obscuring preparations
for a genuine nuclear first strike In response, the Soviets readied their
nuclear forces and placed air units in East Germany and Poland on alert.
This is known as the 1983 war scare. The 1983 war scare is considered by
many historians to be the closest the world has come to nuclear war since
the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. the threat of nuclear war ended with the
conclusion of the exercise on November 11.
This year will see several changes. The primary one is that we will be
operating from an authentic cold war site. Ray (KA3EKH) has approached
The Anne Arundle Amateur radio club and they will host us in their
building. It just so happens their building is the former radar control
building for the W-25 Nike & Hercules missile battery that defended
Washington, DC from the soviet ICBM's. Although not operational in 1983.
W-25 was the showcase Nike site for the east coast and the first to handle
both multiple types of Anti ballistic Missiles. feel free to share the
information about this event which recognize the sacrifices of our
military, signal corps, and members of the clandestine services during this
critical time in the history of the cold war.
