I got a reply from Joe Munson - WA4VAG.  Joe used these radios in Laos
back in the day.

"AFAIK, there never was a dedicated carrier for the PRC 74.  All we had
was the light weight rucksack frames and rucksacks.    One guy carried
the radio, another carried the battery, handset, antenna wire and
string.  Another carried the keyer, and 2 spare batteries,  We just
split up the load between some of the guys on Patrol "

(Light-Weight Rucksack is a specific piece of equipment.  Google same.)

I asked a few additional questions:

They were using " the plastic box with the  two PRC 25/ 77  magnesium
batteries.  and Yes, the GRA 71 Keyer."

Joe continued:

"As we demostrated at GIlbert a few years ago, you may remember when we
hauled the 74 over a couple of riidges away from Gilbert, Had two guys
run out the dipole holding over there heads on 60 meters.  We talked
back to Gilbert over the ridges, and a guy some 250 miles aqway came
back to us. I think we made many believers obout low antenas and low
power.   Basically my set up back some 50  years ago this October.
Usual freq was arond 60 meters..   Info was burst back to 7th RRFS at
UDORN Thailand using a Wullenweber Antenna. farm.  THe RRFS, Radio
Research Facility System was actuall a cover name one of 5 or 6 SIGNET
stations located arouind the globe using Wullenweber antennas.  Banks of
R390A receiver and barracks full of listners.
You can go on web and find pictures of the facility in Udorn.  Google
earth still shows the cleared   off area the Antenna once occupied.
Thai military base now. That  are was so soaked with Agent Orange will
be years before anything grows back there.
We also had PRC 64s deployed out to operatives to send back info on CT
activity."
Looking forward to Gilbert again. "

73,
Al
