While that is partially eventually correct, it isn't technically correct.  
Radios that could have been said to have replaced it are probably SCR-288 
and SCR-177.  SCR-288 was in turn replaced by SCR-284 which was replaced by 
SCR-694-C.  Etc.  As SCR-178 pre-war was considered a Field Artillery set, I 
guess that one could say that its function was at least in part replaced by 
the SCR-608 family.  However, the Army had going through a lot of changes in 
the time between those two sets.  AFAIK, by the time that the War began (for 
the US), the SCR-178 had been relegated to some training roles stateside 
except for some that may have been in the P.I..  The last manual printed on 
the set is dated December 15, 1941.  Some sets were built in the Summer of 
1941 and replacement components as late as early 1943.  I would doubt that any 
more ever went OUTCONUS.
