Earlier this year I setup a BC-1306 with GN-58 at a local middle school
WWII history event. 175 kids later, not only was the generator nearly too hot
to touch, but the rivits holding on the front leg mounting plate had
almost fallen out.
I can say that each and every child was fascinated with talking on the
radio and cranking the generator. That is, once they understood "Push-To-Talk"
- a concept totally foreign to the children of today.
Lesson learned: never underestimate the enthusiasm (and energy) of
children.

Hi Breck - It's true. Only under my direct supervision. In addition to
the hazard to small fingers etc, older kids will try to make it go as fast
as possible, others will try to spin it backwards.
Gotta keep a sharp eye, and I also remove/hide the cranks when I am not in
the immediate area..
Tnx, Tim

I want to caution everyone about using a GN-45 or similar hand crank
generators. Once that generator gets up to speed the rotating crank handles
become very dangerous if the child or adult should let go of the crank
handles. Often they will try and grab the handles again. Never leave the
generator unattended and if necessary remove the crank handles. I've displayed
similar gen sets for years at Airshows, Rallies, meets etc. and yes they make
an excellent display and visitors like it when the set comes alive.

I don't have a military vehicle but I do participate in the MVCC/MVPA
rally's with lots of comm gear. They compliment each other nicely.
Specifically addressing the idea of an SCR-284 in receive mode: I usually
set mine up with the GN-45 for the kids to try out. I run a CD player
with CW cipher groups driving a URM-25 signal generator in the external
modulation mode..The SCR-284 in AM mode receives the MCW signal nicely. Others
at the event with HF receivers in vehicles can also hear it. Eyes light
up....
The kids turn the cranks and get immediate feedback with CW coming from
the receiver. Very popular. Easy to set up. Then pressing the CW key in
Transmit gets their attention...
Some pix and details of this setup at the recent National MVPA event in CA.

We also run CW contacts days and nights with the GRC-9, GRC-109, RS-6
etc. At this event Paul also ran his SCR-499 on high power AM up and down the
west coast for the MRCG AM net on 3985 kc, makes for great demonstrations..
