I don't have a military vehicle but I do participate in the MVCC/MVPA
rally's with lots of comm gear. They compliment each other nicely.
Specifically addressing the idea of an SCR-284 in receive mode: I usually
set mine up with the GN-45 for the kids to try out. I run a CD player with
CW cipher groups driving a URM-25 signal generator in the external
modulation mode..The SCR-284 in AM mode receives the MCW signal nicely.
Others at the event with HF receivers in vehicles can also hear it. Eyes
light up....
The kids turn the cranks and get immediate feedback with CW coming from the
receiver. Very popular. Easy to set up. Then pressing the CW key in
Transmit gets their attention...
Some pix and details of this setup at the recent National MVPA event in CA.

We also run CW contacts days and nights with the GRC-9, GRC-109, RS-6 etc.
At this event Paul also ran his SCR-499 on high power AM up and down the
west coast for the MRCG AM net on 3985 kc, makes for great demonstrations..
