[MRCA] The Radio Sets Were Humming...

All this talk of dynamotor sounds makes me think of a line from the WWII era
song "Comin' in on a wing and a prayer". 

 

>From the song: 

 

"The radio sets were humming,

We waited for a word,

Then a noise broke 

Through the humming and this is what we heard"

 

What is the "humming" referring to? 

 

I have my idea.
