Well, the option for "forward” operation would  be the hand cranked generator which is not all that quiet.  Lots of pictures of such operation on the Marauder’s web site.

As someone else mentioned, the PE-103 was a very hot surplus item in the late 40s through the 1950’s.  Worked off 6 vdc unlike most other surplus equivalents available the time.
