Ah, yes - Atlantic Highlands overlooking Sandy Hook. My first efforts at mobile hilltopping were from the back seat of the family car
(I was too young to drive) on 6 meter A.M. with a rock-bound Lafayette HB45 transceiver in '63 or '64 while parked at the side of the road near the top of the hill. Fantastic view! Success eluded me, since we had made no modifications to the car to kill the ignition noise, and we were so close to the highway the noise from other vehicles would have clobbered any signals anyway. Too bad this was before the rise of amateur radio FM operation.

I have read somewhere, and believe, that the Highlands are the highest point on the eastern coast of the U.S. If you must be in NJ (I escaped two weeks after graduating high school), overlooking Sandy Hook is one fantastic spot to deploy to! Good luck and have fun!

If you’re in the neighborhood check out NY54 at Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook NJ. They have restored the Radar site and offer tours during this summer:

Some of the tour guides were based there are tell fascinating stories.

Right out of the park is Hartshorne Woods park which housed Highlands Air Force Station

While nothing remains of the radar site it overlooks the ocean and is a nice place to operate. Hopefully I will be calling in on the M&S net this summer.
