[MRCA] In Defense of the V and 60 Meter portable operation

A coat hanger or shopping cart will work as an antenna when used with a tuner. Somehow remember suffering thru a microwave engineering class that spent the majority of time concentrating on transmission line theory and coming away with the idea that all any antenna tuner is doing is matching the impedance of the line and signal generator to the different impedance of the antenna itself and has no effect on how well the antenna works and in reality is often a source of significant loss when viewing the transmitter, line and antenna as a network. So at least for me I don't have much faith in antenna tuners. At sixty meters and above the elements of an antenna become more manageable and I have a tendency to want to go with cut dipoles. I see the inverted V as a field expedient version of a dipole and as such that's why I stick with that antenna. I did try some shorter stuff and verticals but they all only preformed at a fraction of what the V dose under similar circumstances. On Saturday last between the V and the vertical on the mutt KK1K at around one hundred miles distance saw a ten to fifteen Db difference between the two antennas.
I did just pick up AS-2259 and as soon as I figure out how to build a base for it will be attempting to use that for the net and will be interested in seeing the results but for myself tend not to put a lot of faith into antenna tuners. But that's just me and your results may be different.

Hi Mike,
For the kind of propagation we're using, mostly NVIS, even 12-15 feet at the center will get the job done. I personally keep coming back to the end-fed half-wave in a similar configuration. One support, no feedline, throw out a bit of a counterpoise. Works well if your antenna tuner accommodates it.
I've successfully served as NCS with such a skywire with 20-watts out of the PRC-104.

Well we're in the middle of winter and I start to think about my spring projects. One of them is working the M&S net from the field.
Does anyone have any antenna recommendations? From what I've read an Inverted V looks like a good choice for a NVIA antenna. What is the minimum recommended mast height needed to support the V?
I have a 30 foot Jacktite push up mast but it is kinda lightweight and I don't think it would support a 60 meter dipole. Any recommendations?
