I agree. I call it the "Rosebud" effect. Remember Citizen Caine?

Like many hams of my era I started out with a Command set transmitter (don't remember which model and a BC-453 beacon receiver with a 40 meter converter. This price was right and it had good frequency stability.

I also was attracted to the black box Avionics look. I also like to operate portable so I built a small transmitter to compliment the BC-453.

Now 40 years later, when I buy a mil surplus. commercial or Amateur rig I always prefer the small black box style radios over those large boatanchors or desktop rigs with a million controls. When I analyze my operating style I realize I am trying to recreate the experiences of my youth or the adventures I read about in books.

As I tell my wife it stimulates the brain and make me more effective at work. She doesn't believe a word of it.

At the end of the day looking at this in terms of functionality proves it’s pointless! The problem is we collect this stuff because the way it makes us feel or for some weird reason about it bringing back our youth or for its technical historical significance (that may be a bit of a stretch!) but there is some intangible quality that drives us to spend hundrets of hours and lots of money on projects that others may consider pointless, or perhaps it’s a form of mental illness?

Although I did sell off a broadcast transmitter that I had on 160 so that provided a hole.
