Usually they can NOT manage SOS, nor can most hams, even from the Morse Code era.
They invariably send it as S O S (three separate characters). But it is supposed to be sent as one continuous unbroken prosign of three dots plus three dashes plus three dots. Only then does it have the intended uniquely distinct sound not carried by any other international Morse character or prosign.
You'd be surprised how many old-time hams who never held commercial radiotelegraph licences don't know how to correctly send SOS. But that's all just a historical curiousity now...just a footnote.
