[MRCA] Field opps this Saturday

Well those two hills fifteen and twenty miles out don't look good. Though everything dropped off from where I was to the south and east. The Log periodic will be vertical with the AS-2851/TR being able to flip remotely from H to V just by pulling a rope on the ground but know that running this setup in Gilbert there was a noticeable difference between H and V.
Will see how the lower bands work out with the M&S Net ant noon and maybe shoot for 18.15 to 18.16 around two or so in the afternoon. The issue there is will just be using the GRC whip antenna where I have a inverted V that I will be using for 60 meters.
I will have my PRC-103 set up on 5.357 USB as a guard channel radio with the inverted V so can coordinate with that if anyone wants to try anything. Will also have a VHF radio with me and monitor 146.52 or if they have a local repeater around there can listen in on that. Think the big issue will be getting there on time and getting everything up before noon, and also if I will be able to drive the guy stakes and stuff into the ground or if it will all be rock.
If anyone is around feel free to visit, I will be at site PCG1, see the Weiser State Forest, Port Clinton page at:

Well "low band" VHF is a little different and has a way of sneaking around terrain.
That is one of the reasons a lot of State Police Departments used Low band instead of high VHF. I certainly would try it and optimize the heading of the antennas etc. It will take some sort of gain antenna on each end - - Ray has some sort of multi element log periodic of which I would assume at least two or possibly three of the elements of the log are active on 51.0 simulating a 2 or possibly a 3 element beam - giving some sort of gain over a dipole. So it would help if they had a 2 or 3 element beam on the other end. If I were doing it I would consider switching back and forth between vertical and horizontal polarization. Back when I did a lot of contesting I had old alliance rotors on the boom on some of the beams so that I could vary the polarization and often made contacts with the polarization some where between vertical and horz. If it were a serious attempt I would certainly give it the ole college try but optimize each station as to beam heading, polarization, etc
(and don't forget to turn the squelch off and completely open up the receivers on each end :-) )

Breck anf The Group,

There are two ridges between Pottstown and "The Pinnacle" near Port Clinton, so I don't think VHF is going to work.

Be interesting to look at a Topo map and chart the ground path for 51.0 and 29.4.to W3A
This will allow you get obtain the correct bearing to your target and if using a Mag compass don't forget to correct for variation.
Nice to have this type of info prior to deploying. :-)
What freqs and times will you be guarding on 20,18, 15 and 10?

W3LP, the East Penn Amateur Radio Club will be operating from the field this Saturday as part of their annual "Operation Able Archer 83" with the special call W3A for the day of the event. For no particular good reason other than because I can I have decided that I will go out into the field and operate as an ad hoc field Cemetery Net ECCCS station running the M151 with the VRC-43, GRC-106 and maybe a couple other radios thrown in too. For this event I will be dragging everything out to a remote location on top a mountain in Port Clinton and attempting to establish a VHF "push" on 51.0 along with a HF link back to the W3A base in Pottstown, a distance of around thirty five miles from where I will be located. Also intend to participate in the M&S Net at twelve hundred hours local and want to try to get some calls in on the 20, 18, 15 and 10 meters bands. I will have a good antenna set up for 60 meters and a radio set to 5357 USB as a calling channel but only anticipate using the seventeen foot whip on the mutt for the rest of the operation. I will also have the low band log periodic set up for 51.0 and at an elevation of around one thousand feet this may be an opportunity to try to do a longer path with 51.0?
