Well, I put mine on the air with the Hand Crank Generator up at Dayton Hamvention one year for the old military radio net.  Run it in the shack on the local nets using a Switching power supply fro a GE VHF set, modified for the bias, 90 volts, etc.  packaged in a 50 cal ammo box with a gel cell battery.  I think the BC 1306 more or less replaced the SCR 288, also built by Crosley and others.  The GRC 9 may or may not have been deplyed during WWII.
