Ray,
You are correct. The original sets, bearing the RCA MI-8751
designation, were produced for Sweden, but got headed off by the Signal
Corps. These are pained grey, have a two-piece front panel, and RCA
"meatballs." The cases are lighter than the later productions BC-474.
Bother versions are designated P/O SCR-288.
The N3FRQ Collection
If you look closely, you'll see there were mods to add a second
headphone jack, and change the mic connector to make Ft. Monmouth happy.
The SCR-284, like a camel, was a horse designed by a committee. The
ultimate answer was the SCR-294 that begat the beloved AN/GRC-9.
