[MRCA] Question

      Last fall a pristine AN/USM 159 followed me home all the way to 
Canada from last fall's NEAR-fest.
      It had an open PS electrolytic that was easily replaced. I believe 
that it is the transistorized version of the venerable BC-221 frequency 
meter.
      The question is, at the time of release what was it's primary 
military function? A signal generator?
