I've received a lot of emails concerning the posting of my
"Bench Notes" on the R-390A Transceiver using the receiver VFO/PTO to
drive a small oscillator/mixer which in turn drives a transmitter of
choice via the crystal socket.
Some people wanted to know why? And the answer is because it
was fun to use the receiver in a more active mode.
My best and most constructive email was from Perry W8AU and it
is quoted below.
"Breck: Why did you key the 6U8 xtal osc instead of the normal
method of keying the mixer, which allows a lot of wave shaping without
affecting the frequency?"
My answer was: Probably because I have always keyed the oscillator in
the past and did not give it enough thought. :-)
Any way the suggestion from Perry was very much appreciated and I am
sure keying the cathode of the mixer will produce better keying
characteristics. A note was entered to that effect on the article.
Thanks Perry.
