[MRCA] The Return of Uncle Ho

Long ago (1969-69) and not so far away I attended the US Army Signal 
School at Ft. Monmouth, NJ where I wasted time poking around the Signal 
Corps Museum,  One of the exhibits was captured Viet Kong "homebrew" 
radio equipment constructed in GI ammo cans.

A few year ago I reproduced such a receiver, a 6BE6 converter feeding a 
pentode regenerative detector at 1700 KHz.  It worked pretty well one 
CW, but didn't have enough gain on AM for anything but strong broadcast 
stations.





The set tunes 3.5 to 7.5 MHz, so covers the 80/75, 60, and 40 hambands.  
I used a tuning cap assembly from an ARC-5 receiver, and had wound two 
RF coils that were "top-coupled" to provide extra selectivity.



A couple of days ago, I resurrected Uncle Ho, and shoehorned in a 6BA6 
RF amp with an RF gain control.

I'm declaring victory.  Today I tuned in the Moose and Squirrel net.  
The dial is sufficiently accurate that I found them with no problem, and 
the high-performance regen detector copies SSB pretty well.  The gain 
control is important, especially on sideband.

Stations heard:  WB2JWO, W1AEA, N3OD, KD3HT, KA3TIN, AND NN2K.  No joy 
with N1SNG-mobile, but I have trouble hearing him on a real radio.

Now let's see if I can manage a low-power AM/CW transmitter to go with 
it for Gilbert.
