Couple pictures of the Fort Miles operation this weekend. I used the AN/PRC-108 USCG Sunair portable SSB transceiver along with the push up mast with inverted V antenna. Solid copy on most stations and always surprised on how well the little 20 watt radio gets out, don't know why but find it interesting that stations in PA and NY always come in stronger and hear me better then net control over in NJ just across the bay? Maybe if I used smaller vertical antenna would have more success with close in stations but like being able to hear and be heard by all in the net.
The Fort Milles facility is a nice visit being able to see the old buildings and a lot of the costal artillery that they have gathered there. There are well over a dozen guns on display including their massive twelve inch gun along with many of its components and a section of eighteen inch armor plate with a hole blown thru it by what I assume was a twelve inch round. Would be interested in going back during one of their open houses and seeing the insides of the bunkers and what if anything has been done in the form of C&C and plotting for that installation.
