When infrared remotes were introduced the US was a late adapter. The
networks and advertising companies lobbied against it because the muting and
channel surfing would cut into their revenues from commercials.
The networks also feared that if you surfed and found a more interesting
show you would stay with that show.
Unfortunately today it seems both broadcast and cable channels synchronize
heir commercials at the same time.

For my money, the best part of the Remote is the MUTE button for use during
commercials.
