Hi w2hx,

Sorry, didn't get your name. I like your rig, especially that tower on back. That's got to beat the heck out of putting together aluminium poles!

Below are links to a few photos of my Land-Rover. Unfortunately, they don't really show the radios. I have hundreds of photos, but for some reason can't seem to put my fingers on those showing radios at the moment. Will have to dig some out… It has a Motorola Micom-XR HF rig, as used by the Dutch and Israelis in their Land-Rovers, and a UK PRC-352 for tactical VHF. Both fully operational of course.

I know what you mean about being loads of fun. The Land Rover is my favorite of all my trucks. I've owned it for 29 years, got it right out of MOD surplus in 1985, and have had many, many, adventures with it over the years.

Do you go to any Land-Rover rallies? I sometimes go the Mid-Atlantic Rally and the SOLAROS rally. Also 4x4Ham, Steel Soldiers Georgia, and our local Knoxville Military Vehicle Club (KMVC) events.

Garret, I would love to see some photos of your air portable. Here is mine operating at the MRCA annual Gilbert event. Loads of fun...

Just realized this didn't go to the list.
------------------------------------------

Hi Don and Dean

Yes, it was good while it lasted, but fading in and out the whole time. Yes, I was mobile, in my 1970 military 1/2-ton Land-Rover, also known as the "Air Portable" Land-Rover. It's an ex "British Army of the Rhine" (BAOR) vehicle, with a British PRC-352, running about 20W. I'm using a US AS-3900 broadband antenna, rear mounted, and the antenna was tied down horizontally.

I heard at least two different stations, but fading was very deep and frequent. Unfortunately, I have the squelch set pretty tight, in order to avoid local QRM. I think if it had been a little looser, I would have heard you all much better. I leave the radio on all the time, as many of us in our local Military Vehicle club operate on 51 MHz, but no one else in the area does, so it ends up being fairly exclusive to our club. So it was a surprise to hear you guys on there. At first I thought you were locals, as we also sometimes have a net on Sunday afternoon.

For more cold war content, and by pure coincidence, when I first heard the net I was just outside the gates of the Y-12 Plant, which is one of the WWII Manhattan Project plants built in Oak Ridge. I was about a half-mile from where the buildings where the Uranium 235 was separated for the A-bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

I'll be on this weekend, one way or the other. But unfortunately, I don't think I will be at Dayton.

73,
Garret

Hi Garret,
There are 5 or 6 of us that get on 51.0 every Sunday evening at 6:30 PM local. Kutztown, PA area. You had a good signal for 2 or 3 minutes then faded out. Rig here is a RT-1439 with a AM-7239 50W amp to a Comet GP-15 antenna. I beleive you said a Range Rover with a PRC-352 near Oak Ridge,TN. Good opening while it lasted! Hope to hear you again on the next opening. Maybe from the flea market in Dayton this week-end!
73,
Don, K3OP
Kutztown, PA
