Sounds like you're discovering the corollary to Murphys law. 'The
longevity of an antenna is inversely proportional to the conditions
endured while erecting it'. An antenna put up in sunny, 70 degree
weather may last a day or two but an antenna put up at night in the
snow or rain will last years. To make it last forever, put it up with an
aluminum extension ladder at night during a freezing rain and sleet
storm with a flashlight clenched in your teeth. If no freezing rain is
available, you could substitute with someone spraying you with a garden
hose while up on the ladder...
