I was impressed and inspired by Walt's GRA-39 setup last
year, so he gets credit for having the first GRA-39 operation at
Gilbert. He used one to go from his inside ops to his commo trailer
outside the building to run a VHF set. (I have his demo on video if I
can every finish the Gilbert 2013 web pages) I pulled my sets out last
month (purchased several years ago at Gilbert for $5 bucks a box) and
did some testing. Bad thing about the operations of each unit - - the
remote and the local control require 6 D cells each. I found one really
corroded battery box but found a replacement on ePay. The sets uses a
1500 cycle tone for control so a "direct pair" line is not necessary.
During my testing I found that each unit can easily run off of a small 9
volt battery, current draw on the 2329 Local Control was nil on receive
and 20-25 ma on transmit (relay closes), so that 9 volt battery should
last quite a while. On the 2328 Remote the current draw is a little
higher, 10 ma on receiver and approx 30 ma on transmit. Both sets have
On and Off switches to conserve power, the manual ringer/buzzer still
works without power to alert the operator to turn his set on.
A couple things I would like to try is see if you can parallel two Local
Control units. In addition I would like to try the wiring interface
between the GRA-39 Remove Control and the SB-22 and use the switchboard
to connect the system to different "subscribers" (that's teleco talk) .
And to use the set for HF ops. See diagram below.
Speaking of batteries, I need to hit the local dollar store and scoff up
a supply of cheep D cells for all the phones etc. :-)
