Breck, very interesting idea. I hadn't thought of insulating using nylon. And excellent picture! How did you make that? Mast is aluminum. It is an 8m racal push-up mast.

First I would not take a chance on having that lumped impedance secretly hiding inside the reel, too unpredictable. The tuner might even recognize that as the antenna and ignore the wire.  :-)

I would take a wire the length of the pole, cut off the rest and do a nautical splice with a couple of feet of nylon rope.  The nylon rope is now your insulator.  Use a standard wire nut to hook the feed line to the vertical wire.  The whole thing can wind up inside the reel. Remove the wire nut prior to winding up the wire.   :-)

On QUESTION: The second type of reel (with insulated cable) seems to come in 50-foot lengths. This means that about 25 feet will remain on the reel in a loop about 3-4 inches in diameter. I am worried that this will create an RF choke and reduce the performance of the radiator. Or, it might make some kind of base loading, I really don't know. Of course an alternative would be to cut down the cable to 25-26 feet or so, but I was wondering if anyone had thoughts about the effect of having this 25' coiled before the vertical radiator.
