[MRCA] Definition of "Push" WRT Frequency Assignment?

Breck- what is the history of using the term "push" to designate an operating 
frequency for a mission?  Mil slang, or is it an acronym?  How long has the term 
been in use?  Push, as in push the channel selector button? I've heard this term 
for many years but never knew where it came from.
