I'd try it on something not scarce first.

I think I'd try humidifying it first by putting it in a sealable container
with something wet, like a facecloth, in the container, but not in contact
with any part of the strap, for a few days.

Canvass is often treated with moisture repellant or other dressings and
washing and/or wetting w/ glycerin may damage that.

IMO, thye glycerin may cause the cases or carrier to rust. It is
hygroscopic, so never dries out.
