It was the first time I tried to use the radio with the whip (with a
counterpoise). I don't care for the standard whip for this radio. First, it
seems short. I haven't measured it but it's no AT-271. Secondly, unlike the
271 that has the elastic cord running through the segments, this one just
has a wire cable. You have to manually cinch or loosen everything. So it's
a little harder to assemble and disassemble. I might investigate making an
adapter between the radio's whip and the AT-271.

But I also think there is some local QRM in my area on this band. I noticed
it during my last M&S check in, but then I was using my OCF dipole over the
house (135' long). And I think it wasn't affected by the noise as much as
the little whip.

Interestingly, I was hearing some hams for the Virginia QSO party (or
whatever it was) on 40M very well. And some heard me, but couldn't make out
my call (too weak). But that's probably not bad for max 25W setting into a
little whip in my back yard on 40M at 3PM.

I am thinking of trying out a buddi pole for portable work. Not sure I'll
really ever have much joy with a little whip. Hoping to find an antenna
that is easy to port around, easy to set up. Something between the signal of
a real dipole (requiring trees or otherwise) and my little whip. I do have a
nice military dipole that has all the bands marked off along the legs. But
deploying a dipole seems like a real commitment to a day of radio!

Hello Eugene,

Conditions were not great. What were you using for an antenna? K4CHE
checked in from the field with a Southcom packset using an end-fed
half-wave. His sigs were weak/readable.
