Looking at all the older military and "para-military" pack sets I 
think the SGC and Southcom
series are the easiest to work on. The older crystal controlled sets 
can easily be modified to accept
a more modern "DDS"  synthesizer VFO. A cheeep way to go. The later 
SGC's and Southcom's were not
crystal controlled and had a synthesizer built in.       Wish I had 
one.       :-)
