Michael,
Check out the Elecraft KX3, or consider a K2 from the same (California) company. Right now KX3's are still backlogged, but there are many good used K2s on the market as folks want to move up to the new rig. Both are small, light, and in the 10 to 15 watt category. Internal antenna tuner available option, or use an external of your choice. Good on batteries, repairable, great performance. Downside: Ham gear, i.e. not monsoon proofed. Small enough for a small plastic bag.
Welcome home, brother.

I'm rated at 100%, service connected. Part of it's physical and the rest
psych which makes clear thought and memory a joke way too often.

Hmmm ... while I just mentioned it as a model (2-30 MC with a means of
offsetting between the 1KC settings, multimode, 20w or so out packset that
can handle a variety of antennas etc) rather than a specific system, the
downsides are good to know. The general idea is to be able to operate from
beach parks, the occasional remote location, my retirement closet here at
the Vets' Residence or my truck using whatever's handy as an antenna whether
it's military, civilian or improvised. While I'm sure that there are ham
rigs that could do this, my faith in the KenYaeIc family is a rather large
step below none.

Best regards,

Note to self: Need more henchmen, good ones this time. Also, start
auditions for new female lab assistant.
