Dennis,
Moose and Squirrel is your basic NVIS situation. The ionospheric FoF2
has generally been too low lately to support near-vertical reflections
on 40, and it seems that D-layer absorption kills 75.
I'm not stuck on 60-meters for the net, but it remains our best bet for
what we're doing. As you indicate, HF conditions have been really awful
lately.
I use this Australian webpage to try to gain some insight:
http://www.ips.gov.au/HF_Systems/6/5 Use the "hourly" "HAP charts" for
real-time NVIS conditions in your area. Correlation has be pretty good
with what we see on the net.
