Hi Tom,
I was hoping some one would come forth with some wisdom on this
subject. Guess you'll have to settle for my ramblings.
It's easier on the coasts. There are still a fair number of decent
hamfests within driving distance of Jersey City. In recent years, we've
also learned that Military Vehicle Rallys are reasonable sources of
electronics. However, when you're a thousand miles from nowhere (sorry,
not meant to be a cheap shot), the web may be your only hope.
In addition to Fair and E-bay there are others like Murphy Surplus, El
Cajon, Ca. http://www.murphyjunk.bizland.com/
Ebay is OK for something you really want.

You might also use web forums like this mailing and
milsurplus at mailman.qth.net to state what your looking for and hope
someone steps forward.
Also check out The Military Radio Collectors Group
http://www.mrcgwest.org/ This is more of a West-Coast institution.
