[MRCA] HF/VHF Cross band retranse

Yes, it is a pretty easy task to
use the retranse function of the PRC-25 family radios, especially cross
band. The hardest part in an HF/VHF cross band system is keying of the
VHF component by the HF. HF radios with a squelch system, especially
portable ones, are not very common. The GRC-106, as well as the R-392,
have a squelch intended for this purpose, though they are not a very
good. An outboard device was built for use the PRC-74 & PRC-104. This was the AM-7152(Fair has um). Opinions on how well the audio derived squelch worked differ but are generally favorable.

The original retranse cable for the PRC-25 is rather rare & it's not
just a cable that's cross-wired. It has some diodes in it for isolation
& RF filtering(which is of major concern).

The Marines thought to eliminate some of the guess work in portable
retranse systems utilizing the C-7673/PCC-1 which is surprisingly not
uncommon.

With late model equipment the ability to utilize cross band retranse is
greatly simplified, especially with Harris equipment. KM6AB once checked in to our nightly 40 meter net from the shower using his RF-5020 &
one of those Personal Radio sets(PRC-343?) which are pretty much
worthless for anything other than the wireless mic application Mike had
applied it to. Most Marine, commercial, & para-military, HF set have very effective syllabic squelch systems that would be adaptable to cross band retranse switching.
